you might want to mention which ones are hosted by the company, and which ones allow you to download the software and host it yourself. As far as I know Ning is hosted by the company, whereas Elgg you download and run on your own server (LAMP stack). I don't know about the other two though.

Its built on the Ning platform. I have 2 other sites built on the Ning platform. Ning is easy to use,has many features,and is free. Wackwall is cheap and seems to be flooded with Pornography. I've tried many,but haven't found one yet that's as good as Ning.
yes you are right, ning is the best but you are not fully in control of the of your site, like for example the Advertisement is publish by NING.
If I have social networking website, I want to be fully in control the site.
